P a g e Three PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE eWs Our school is a fast growing young institution and, like any youngster, it faces many problems in its struggle for a place in the world. But, being young, it tackles these problems with an open mind and a willingness to break with tradition and established custom. The results have been beneficial to both students and teachers and have given us some hope that this school con make a valuable contribution to education in this district. We are most fortunate in having a staff of young teachers, with enough seasoned veterans to supply the experience needed when decisions are being made. Their efforts have resulted in very worthwhile contributions in the areas of discipline, testing, guidance, administration and student activities. Most important are the procedures that have been worked out, which reduce the causes of tension between teachers and students. Further work on these will produce an environment where hard work can be done without hard feelings. It has been very pleasing to me to see the progress our students are making towards self government and self discipline. Perhaps students will always "creep like a snail, unwillingly to school," but the day must come when democracy is practised as well as taught in our classrooms. The 1961-62 Students Council has done its part towards bringing that day nearer. The thanks of all of us should be extended to the caretaking staff and the secretory for their fine work during the year. Now all that remains is to wish our grade nines and twelves the best of luck in their exams and to wish everyone a good holiday this summer. R. An unknown author composed these four lines which are an excellent guide for our future. This year we are leaving high school after twelve years of accumulative learning. We are entering a challenging world, mysterious and unpredictable. Some of us will have attained our goals and settled in our careers, while others will go on climbing the ladder of knowledge. Whichever path we choose, let us remember our morals, our ambitions, our destinies, let us acknowledge life's joys and sorrows, successes and failures, rewards and misgivings. Regardless of where we go or what we do, let us be the best in our field, making our family, friends and school proud and respectful of us. If we can solve, conquer and understand all our misfortunes, then we are truly deserving of the rewarding life. Those remaining in Churchill: do not become perverted. Have faith in your school, your teachers and yourselves. Be content today but remember tomorrow will arrive, cither bright or gloomy, depending upon how you prepare for it. Should not tomorrow's laughter be merrier? This second edition of the Statesman could not hove been completed without Mr. McCue's endless contributions, the staff's ideas and spirit, and each and all of the students and teachers. A special thanks goes to the Photography Club for their help and to Mr. Turner for his co operation. P a g e Ten BRENDA NEVILLE "late? . . . Absent?"VALEDICTORY 1962 Today we become graduates of Winston Churchill High School. For twelve yeors we have come to school, to play, to work, and to learn. Our goal — graduation — is reached, and the past will become memories, memories that linger, constant and true, memories we'll cherish, grads of '62. Often we have talked of being on our own, today wc have achieved this freedom. "When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man I put away childish things." It is time to store our childish things; we are on the threshold of adulthood, and must accept the responsibility and maturity that accompanies this title. We, the class of '62, can be compared to an ocean liner: this is our christening. Many people, including our parents, our teachers and our friends, will follow our progress with deep interest, as we voyage through life. As the ship approaches the horizon it can not see beyond; it can not foretell what storms or dangers are awaiting it. We, too, are unaware of the storms the future holds for us. Just as the ship depends on its instruments to keep it on the correct course, we depend on God's guiding hand, of the storehouse of knowledge wc have obtained and on the character we have molded for ourselves during these past twelve years. If we steer our days along the right path, life's great riches — happiness, success and faith, will accompany us to ihe terminus of our maiden voyage. In a few years the world will be in our hands; the world's problems will be ours also. Over­population, illiteracy, hunger, disease, racial prejudice and wars — these are but a few of the barriers to be conquered. It is a challenge worthy of each of us, worthy of each of our talents. Can we accept it? Thus far, many people have shown faith in us, let's not let their faith be in vain. We will accept it, and do our best to make "peace on earth, good will to man" a reality in this 20th Century. In closing, I would like to extend on behalf of the gradOating class, our sincere thanks to all the people who have encouraged us when wc were discouraged, who have helped us in our quest for learning and who have made possible a wonderful twelve years at school, climaxed by this graduation. As a thought for the future, I would like to quote a poem by an unknown author: "One life and one alone we have to live upon this little earth. One life in which to learn so much, to seek and find and prove our worth. So many dreams there are to dream, so many things to know and do, So many rosy peaks to climb, so many pathways to pursue. So waste no time on fruitless quests, that get you nowhere in the end. The gold of Time is yours to squander, or with care to use and spend. It's folly to postpone good deeds, tomorrow never comes, they say. The future belongs to God; ycur only chance is now, today." May God guide and bless us, Grads of '62. BARB FRYER P a g o Eleven CLASS HISTORY We have been the senior students at Churchill High for the two years of its existence, therefore our class history is the history of our school. It all began when we registered in an office, gloriously now but disorganized. The rest of the building was also in a disorganized state, which gavo us cause to believe that the school term would not begin on lime. However, school began os planned, and it was then that we first mot the teaching staff. Mr. Flanagan looked like ho was going to bo a problem from the start. Ho alarmed us all by walking in and ordering a poor, innocent student to clean the blackboard. On the other hand, our language tcachor, Mr. Rodnunsky, did not ovon make an appearance. Within a month, the whole school was caught-up in the fever of cloction. Our first council was elected, with Thelma Kosoka os President. Under her capable guidance, plans were soon laid for the year's social activities. The Christmas Prom, the Mad-e-Gras and Club 61 will bo remembered by all >vho attended. Grade eleven saw the formation of tho first Bulldog basketball teams. Although the senior teams were not successful in making the finals, they demonstrated good sportsmanship and set a fine example for future teams. Various extra-curricular activities wore also organized during that first yoar. "The Churchill Chatter" and "The Statesman'' were published. School sweaters and jackets were purchased through the Student's Council. All these things may be listed as great accomplishments for our new school. At tho end of one year, a firm foundation had been laid on which to build our next and final year in high school. It was not long before the newly formed Football Club was putting the fold to good use. Practices wore held every noon and after school. Soon the brave Bulldogs were ready to challenge any other football club. Perhaps the most memorable gome was our "team" victory over the St. Francis Cougars. The succoss of this unified effort gave our morale a torrific boost. After a car parade through downtown Lethbridge, the boys returned to the school to give the coaches their victory showers. Early in the school yoor, the second Student's Council was olccted with Wally Evdokimoff as President, and social activities were once more tho order of tho day. One of the first dances, the Twirp Twirl, was preceded by a rousing advertising campaign. As part of this campaign, a beard growing contest was sponsored by the Booster Club. The winners of the contest: Mr. Hiatt, Rick Steadman, Garry Forbes and Lome Baccda, wore chosen at a school assembly. Another feature of this assembly was the premioro performance, on stage, of Mr. C. Turner's children while "Sick Nick" and his group were entertaining. His daughter also succeeded in giving one of the "twirps" a nervous BREAK-down when she sat on it. To add the finishing touches to this event-filled assembly, two pigeons were set loose in the auditorium. The balance of the year's social activities included tho Christmas Prom, Crazyville and Club 62. This year's basketball teams came through with many victories to their credit. The girls' team, coached by Mr. Hiatt, displayed good sportsmanship throughout the series. Tho boys' team, benefiting from one year's ex- pericncc. made a determined recovery and managed to make the semi-finals under the excellent coaching of Mr. Hamilton. There arc many things about our school that con be classified only as memories. The bathtub race to Cooldalo, the Social discussions in Math., the class parties, the terrible smells omonating from the Chem. Lab., the committee workshops —• those things make a school. Shall we ever forget Mr. Charnctski making cooing noises at tho garter snake or his prancing proudly into the room to announce that our "male" mouse had given birth to baby mice? Or shall we ever cease to moke guesses at the numbor of bow-ties owned by Mr. C. Turnor, what mokes Mr. McCormick lick, or why Mr. Thorlacius is always chosen as disciplinarian? Yes, we hove been very lucky. Few schools can boast, as we con, of such a friendly relationship between teacher and student. It is sincerely hoped that, in future years, even more cooperation and respect will be attained. Our school motto, "Knowledge, Its Own Reward" is a statement of our purpose at Churchill. Our school ring is a material way of expressing pride in the school we call our own. Ken's future plans ore vague, but business or college will probobly be his next step. JOHN CHOMICKI Undoubtedly one of our gifted students. John is reserved, easy to get along with ond very friendly. Out of school his interests take on bowling, television ond a part-time job. Main ambition is to attend Lethbridge Junior College or U. of A. CAROLYN ANNE COWAN Musically inclined, Carolyn takes singing lessons and enjoys girls’ choir. She enjoys sports such as skating, curling ond skiing in winter. Other interests include sorority and teaching Sunday School. Next year's plans: Nursing of the University Hospitol in Edmonton TILLIE DOROK Tillie divides her time between French Club and Yearbook. Outside of school, she is interested in music. A con- scientious worker, Tillie plans on a nursing career after graduation in which she is bound to be successful LAVERNE ERICKSON lively Verne is president of both Dramo Club ond I.S.C.f. and likes music, art and outdoor life. A hard worker, Verne will study music in Calgary next year. WALLY EVDOKIMOFF Our president, spends most of his spare lime performing student council duties. He works at Dominion port time. Wally’s most ardent pel peeve is parly poopers. Future plans are undecided, but he plans on entering college in the fall. CAROL FRANK Industrious ond busy, this loss is a member of the Booster Club, enjoys watching sports and teaching Sunday School, olong with her school activities. Consistently friendly, Carol is bound to be succcsful. St. Michael's for nursing next fall. ELFREIDE FRITZ Elfreide, o whir at French, is known for her lough, her helpfulness, and her friendliness. She likes skating, reading, sewing and cooking. Active in church choir. Young People's ond Sundoy School. Nursing, at St. Michael's next year. BARBARA FRYER An import from Homilton, On!.. Ba»b is active in basket­ball curling and the U.N. Club. Outside of school, interests include public speaking, drama ond the United Notions. U.B.C. next year to enroll in Chemistry. KEN FURUKAWA A fun.loving guy. Ken ploys the guitar and sketches in his sparo time. Ken plant to study electronics at Colgory Tech. P a g o Sev cn toe n ROSANNE GODSAIVE The other half of the Rosonne-Jonet teom is this lively girl. She is odivc in Booster Club and Mousoleague. This future nurse soys she likes shows, pets ond sports. DENNIS GOSHIMON A talented person in the arts, Dennis uses his spore time to sketch ond compose music. He also ploys Iced guitar for the Checkers ond plans to moke Commercial Art his career. BRUCE GOULD An eosy*to*get-olong-with fellow, Bruce is active in church work. His future studies will continue ot Guelph, Ontario, where he plans to become a veterinarian. SHARON GRISAK "Hey guys, coming to the game?" If anyone has school spirit, it's Sharon. She is treasurer of the Student Council for the second term and guards the money as if it were her own. Also active in Houseleogue ond Booster Club, of which she is president. Next year* University for teaching. VELMA GUNTHER Vivacious Vel is Vice-President of Booster Club ond ploys basketball on our senior girls' team. She likes fun and she will moke it if things appear dull. Although unsure obout her future plans, she moy go to Calgary Tech. HAROLD HEGLAND When you see a smiling face, a leisurely walk, you know it's Horold. Hockey, French Club ond Houseleogue toke up his spare lime. Next year he plans to attend college. JANET HEWER Janet is known for her merriness, good nature ond jokes. Monday mornings wouldn't be the same without her. She enjoys Houseleogue, and Booster Club. Nurse troining next yeor in Lethbridge. GLEN HOWELL Versatile Glen, likes whot a typically high school boy likes: (pool, girls, etc.) Active in curling and football, he dislikes homework. He will ottend either Montano Stole College or U.C.l A. next year. PAT JOHNSON Quietly efficient, Pol enjoys being o member of the Curling Club ond girls' choir. Pot's hobbies ore dancing, sports ond reading. Further plons ore undecided, but the possibility of teaching is o good one. PATRICIA KESLER Pot, who »s olwoys fun to be with, enjoys badminton, dancing and dromo. She tokes on odivc port in church orgonicofions ond performs her duties well. Next yeor's plans: lob.
