We are gathered here this evening under mast favorable and pleasant circumstances, the weather is excellent, which always helps, while this vast audience of relatives, friends and neighbors to the grad­uating class have naught in their hearts but the kindliest of feelings and best wishes. This as a back­ground for our 1958 Graduation Ceremony should assure us all an enjoyable and profitable evening. I see before .me a lovely group of young ladies, successful candidates to the graduating class of the Galt School of Nursing for the year 1958. We are here to do them honor. They are here to receive due and proper recognition for the successful culmination or three grill­ing years of study, toil, and service in the discharge of their duties as student nurses. I am delightfully pleased and honored in being privileged to represent the Lethbridge Municipal Hospital Board upon this auspicious and memorable occasion in bringing greetings to you very fine young ladies. Needless to say v/e are extremely proud of your achievement and have been most happy and fortunate, may I say, in having you with the staff for the most of three years. Needless to say i felt very proud and also very humble when I was invited to talk to the Graduating Class oi the Galt School of Nursing for 1958. This is the second time in the thirty-three years that 1 have been associated with the school that I have been so invited, which makes me feel doubly proud. As for the task set before me this evening, I will do my best to leave with you a message that I hope will assist you in the coming years. As you well know, the art of nursing is as old as the soul oi man. You also know that it was not until 1860, that the proper training of nurses came into being. I know that the life of Florence Nightingale has prob­ably been overdone a bit over the years on such occasions as this, but I feel that I would be very remiss in my duty if I did not mention the l'act. that :f it had not been for her I am afraid it might have been a very long time before the human race would have benefited, as it has since that time. You know that your profession is very rich in tradition, and that yours is a wonderful heritage, and although 1 have never heard anyone mention, 1 feel that it is absolutely necessary to remind you that there was another great English lady who started modern training Schools for Nurses in Brussels in 1907. I am sure everyone, and particularly those who served in the First World War were inspired beyond words of expression at the marvellous feats that were performed by Edith Cavell between 1907-1915. I am sure that although she made a tremendous contribution from a training school point of view, her example as a fearless leader during the early part of the First World War will serve as an inspira­tion for all time to come. Any time any oi' you feel that the road is rough and beset with many ob­stacles, you will only have to reflect a moment on the trials and tribulations of that great lady. It was William fames the philos­opher and psychologist a generation ago, who made this dual statement of fact and of belief. It fact that life is a struggle; no one gets very far along the road of life without becoming aware of the truth of this statement. Futhermoro it is also fact that without some form of struggle some outpouring of effort, life would lose much of its richness and value. ’Grandescunt aucta labore' is the motto of one Cana­dian University; a free translation is this: They wh have already attained much, increase their stature only by further effort. It seems to be a universal lav/ o: nature, that growth and development come only as a result of effort and struqgie. The great promises are "to him that overcomelh." When we apply ourselves to the task of training for some particular profession, the goal of our ambition is not attained without much hard work and weari­ness of flesh and mind, but in the effort there is great reward. I speak to you as one who admires your profession, who looks with respect and admiration upon every trained nurse devoting herself unself­ishly and unsparingly to the alleviation of human suffering. It is a noble calling and surely one of the very highest A little knowledge is a dangerous thing only when the possessor of that small amount of knowl­edge fails to realize that it is only a small amount, and that the part is never equal to the whole. As long as we remember this and retain a firm grip upon our common sense, and keep our critical faculties and our imaginations alive, so long will a little knowledge be better than none, and the more knov/ledge you, as nurses, possess the better for you and for the community you serve. If nursing is to be not only an ancient art but a modern science, nurses must have the basic knowledge to (Continued on Page 48)NIGHT AND DAY Page Eleven To tke Graduating Class MISS CLAUDIA TENNANT Tonight marks another milestone in the history of our Hospital and our School of Nursing. Time marches on. Htstory continues to be made — another page in the Book of Time is written — another journey along the pathway of life has begun. Time marches on — and today becomes a link between yesterday and tomorrow — between the past and the future — between your memories and your dreams. Yesterday you chose Nursing. Today you stand on the threshold of a bright and challenging future. And what of tomorrow? What will the future hold for you? What will the future ask of you? Where will the future lead you? Are you prepared to accopt the challenge o: the future? God in his wisdom grants that we live one day at a time. Tonight you are graduating. You have reached your coveted goal — you have mastered the Art and the Science of Nursing. Now you are ready to accept the responsibilities v/hich will be entrusted to you. This should be one of the happiest days of your life — the day you have looked forward to with anticipation — a day you will look back on with many fond memories. Student days have not been easy. The lessons were hard the discipline was exacting. There were hardships to encounter, disappointments to ac­cept — but you met each obstacle as it came and grew in the knowledge that what you were doing was well worth while. Tonight marks a happy occasion for all of us who have worked together towards a common goal. We are proud of the part wo have played in the moulding of a new nurse. V/o are proud of our contribution to society. In the years to come — wherever you go whatever your specific task may be — we trust that you will always 'Live to Serve' and give to the world your very best. Remember always— "When the One Great Scorer comes to write against you name. He marks — not that you won or lost — but how you played the game."Page Twelve GALT SCHOOL OF NURSING Valedictory 1 am very grateful fcr the opportunity of speaking on behalf of my classmates. Tonight marks the culmination of three years training. Not every day was perfect, but each offered something worthwhile in the form of pro­fessional skill, lasting friendships and fond memories. We have the distinction of being the first class to enter training in the new Lethbridge Municipal Hospital. Within its walls we have witnessed the miracle of life and shared experiences of joy and sadness. Through v/ork and study we have emerged with a greater love and understanding of man­kind and an earnest desire to serve. Nursing has made great strides since the time of Florence Nightin­gale. It is hard to realize that less than 100 years ago, nursing was a de­graded task which no respectable person would perform. By her unselfish efforts to help the suffering. Miss Nightingale contributed greatly toward rais­ing nursing to the highly regarded profession we know today. Tonight we are graduating. To the many people who have helped us reach our goal. I would like to say "thank you": To God - for daily strength and the qreat gift of health. To our Parents - for their encouragement and sacrifices so that we may benefit. To Miss Tennant and members of the Nursing Staff - Not only for our educa­tion, but also for their shining example as professional nurses and outstanding citizens. To the Medical Staff - Who with patience and understanding have taught and guided us every step of the way — never too busy to answer a question or explain a procedure. To the Hospital Board - Cur magnificent new hospital with its modern equip­ment is one of the finest in Western Canada. It is a privilege and a pleasure to v/ork in it. The nurses' residence provides the utmost in comfort and convenience and is a source of pride to every nurse who lives in it. To the Galt School of Nursing Alumnae - Who have set the standards of our school and work unceasingly in the interests of the students. To the students v/ho follow - May you uphold the standards of our school. May we all be v/orthy of our calling and fulfill our desire to serve.
