Le don des mots

The Gift of Words In this short paper concerning the translation of poetry, I deliberately chose to adopt a non-technical approach, leaving aside all grammatical, linguistic or stylistic considerations. My purpose is to address the question of the complex, partly unconscious relationship with the mother-tongue AND the foreign tongue. By first seeking in the foreign tongue a new mother tongue, / can finally, in the best of cases, give words -names -to the reader, opening to him a boundless space of reunion with the “forgotten”, magical time when words created his or her universe.Dans ce bref article consacré à la traduction de la poésie, j’ai adopté de propos délibéré une approche non-technique, délaissant toutes les considérations grammaticales, linguistiques ou stylistiques. Je me propose de me pencher sur la relation complexe, pour une part inconsciente, avec la langue maternelle ET avec la langue étrangère. En commençant par chercher dans la langue étrangère une nouvelle langue maternelle, je peux enfin, dans le meilleur des cas, donner au lecteur des mots -des noms- lui ouvrant de la sorte un espace illimité de retrouvailles avec ce temps magique “oublié” où les mots créaient son univers.Tran Van Khai Michelle.
