Symmetries in quantum cosmology - gravity and the problem of time

In this dissertation we studied specific classical and quantum cosmological solutions. Quantum cosmological models are particularly useful, considering that they act as control tools for the theoretical models of quantum gravity. Also, as we will see in some of the models we analyzed, the classical anomalies are eliminated in quantum cosmology. Our analysis is done using the symmetries of action and equation of motion . The sustained loads resulting from the symmetry (linear or square) give extra equations to analyze the model.We start from a static, spherically symmetric space-time in the presence of an electrostatic field and construct the mini-superspace Lagrangian that reproduces the well known Reissner - Nordström solution. We identify the classical integrals of motion that are to be mapped to quantum observables and which are associated with the mass and charge. Their eigenvalue equations are used as supplementary conditions to the Wheeler-DeWitt equation and a link is provided between the existence of an horizon and to whether the spectrum of the observables is fully discrete or not. For each case we provide an orthonormal basis of states as emerges through the process of canonical quantization.Moreover, we consider a Bianchi type III axisymmetric geometry in the presence of an electromagnetic field. A first result at the classical level is that the symmetry of the geometry need not be applied on the electromagnetic tensor Fμν; the algebraic restrictions, implied by the Einstein field equations to the stress energy tensor Tμν, suffice to reduce the general Fμν to the appropriate form. The classical solution thus found contains a time dependent electric and a constant magnetic charge. The solution is also reachable from the corresponding mini-superspace action, which is strikingly similar to the Reissner-Nordstr{ö}m one. This points to a connection between the black hole geometry and the cosmological solution here found, which is the analog of the known correlation between the Schwarzschild and the Kantowski-Sachs metrics. The configuration space is drastically modified by the presence of the magnetic charge from a 3D flat to a 3D pp wave geometry. We map the emerging linear and quadratic classical integrals of motion, to quantum observables. Along with the Wheeler-DeWitt equation these observables provide unique, up to constants, wave functions. The employment of a Bohmian interpretation of these quantum states results in deterministic (semi-classical) geometries most of which are singularity free.Finally, we revisit the axisymmetric Bianchi VIII and IX models. At the classical level we reproduce the known analytic solution, in a novel way making use of two quadratic integrals of motion, the constraint equation, as well as a linear non-local integral of motion. These quantities correspond to two second rank Killing tensors and a homothetic vector field existing on the relevant configuration space. On the corresponding phase space the two quadratic charges commute with the Hamiltonian constraint but not among themselves. Thus, after turning these charges into operators we obtain two different solutions to the Wheeler DeWitt equation utilizing each of the quadratic operators. The homothetic vector is then used, as a natural guide line, to define a normalizable conditional probability which assigns zero to the classically collapsed configurations.Στη παρούσα εργασία μελετήσαμε συγκεκριμένες κλασικές και κβαντικές κοσμολογικές λύσεις. Τα κβαντικά κοσμολογικά πρότυπα είναι ιδιαίτερα χρήσιμα,λαμβάνοντας υπόψιν ότι λειτουργούν ως εργαλεία ελέγχου για τα θεωρητικά μοντέλα της κβαντικής βαρύτητας. Επίσης, όπως θα δούμε και σε κάποια από ταμοντέλα που αναλύσαμε, στην κβαντική κοσμολογία απαλείφονται οι κλασσικέςανωμαλίες. Η ανάλυση μας γίνεται με την χρήση των συμμετριών της δράσης καιτων εξισώσεων κίνησης. Τα διατηρήσιμα φορτία που προκύπτουν από την εκάστοτεσυμμετρία (γραμμική ή τετραγωνική) δίνουν επιπλέον εξισώσεις για την αναλυτικήεπίλυση του μοντέλου.Αρχικά αναλύουμε ένα στατικό, σφαιρικά συμμετρικό χωρόχρονο παρουσία ενόςηλεκτροστατικού πεδίου και κατασκευάζουμε τη Λαγκρανζιανή του μίνιυπερχώρου που αναπαράγει τη γνωστή λύση Reissner-Nordström. Επιλέγουμε στη συνέχειατα κλασικά ολοκληρώματα της κίνησης που πρόκειται να αναχθούν σε κβαντικάπαρατηρήσιμα και τα οποία σχετίζονται με τη μάζα και το φορτίο. Οι εξισώσειςτων ιδιοτιμών τους χρησιμοποιούνται ως συμπληρωματικές συνθήκες στην εξίσωσηWheeler-DeWitt και παρέχεται σύνδεση μεταξύ της ύπαρξης ενός ορίζοντα και τουεάν το φάσμα των παρατηρητών είναι πλήρως διακριτό ή όχι. Για κάθε περίπτωσηπαρέχουμε μια ορθοκανονική βάση καταστάσεων όπως προκύπτει από τη διαδικασία της κανονικής κβάντωσης.Στη συνέχεια θεωρούμε μια αξονο-συμμετρική γεωμετρία Bianchi τύπου III παρουσία ενός ηλεκτρομαγνητικού πεδίου. Ένα πρώτο αποτέλεσμα σε κλασσικό επίπεδο είναι ότι η συμμετρία της γεωμετρίας δεν χρειάζεται να εφαρμοστεί στον ηλεκτρομαγνητικό τανυστή Fμν . Οι αλγεβρικοί περιορισμοί, που προέρχονται από τιςεξισώσεις πεδίων Einstein στον τανυστή ενεργείας πίεσης Tμν , αρκούν για τη αναγωγή της γενικής F μν στην κατάλληλη μορφή. Η κλασική λύση που βρέθηκε περιέχειένα χρονοεξαρτωμενο ηλεκτρικό φορτίο και ένα σταθερό μαγνητικό φορτίο. Η λύσημπορεί να βρεθεί και από την δράση του μίνι-υπερχώρου, η οποία είναι εντυπωσιακά παρόμοια με την Reissner-Nordstrom. Αυτό καταδεικνύει μια σχέση μεταξύτης γεωμετρίας των μελανών οπών και της κοσμολογικής λύσης που βρέθηκε εδώ,η οποία είναι αντίστοιχη με την αναλογία μεταξύ Schwarzschild μελανής οπής καιτου κοσμολογικού μοντέλου Kantowski-Sachs. Ο θεσεογραφικός χώρος τροποποιείται δραστικά από την παρουσία του μαγνητικού φορτίου, από επίπεδος τρισδιάστατος σε επίπεδο τρισδιάστατο pp-wave. Απεικονίζουμε τα γραμμικά και τετραγωνικά κλασικά ολοκληρώματα της κίνησης, σε κβαντικά παρατηρήσιμα. Μαζί μετην εξίσωση Wheeler-DeWitt αυτά τα παρατηρήσιμα στοιχεία παρέχουν μοναδικέςκυματοσυναρτήσεις με απροσδιόριστες τις σταθερές.Τέλος επανεξετάζουμε τα αξονοσυμμετρικά πρότυπα Bianchi VIII και IX. Στοκλασσικό επίπεδο αναπαράγουμε τη γνωστή αναλυτική λύση, με ένα νέο τρόπο χρησιμοποιώντας δύο τετραγωνικά ολοκληρώματα της κίνησης, τον δεσμό, καθώς καιένα γραμμικό μη τοπικό ολοκλήρωμα της κίνησης. Αυτές οι ποσότητες αντιστοιχούνσε δύο τανυστές Killing δεύτερης τάξης και ένα ομοθετικό διανυσματικό πεδίο πουυπάρχει στον αντίστοιχο θεσεογραφικό χώρο. Στο αντίστοιχο φασικό χώρο τα δύοτετραγωνικά φορτία μετατίθονται με τον Χαμιλτονιανό δεσμό αλλά όχι μεταξύ τους.Έτσι, αφού μετατρέψουμε αυτά τα φορτία σε τελεστές, έχουμε δύο διαφορετικέςλύσεις στην εξίσωση Wheeler DeWitt που αντιστοιχούν στους δύο τετραγωνικούςτελεστές. Το ομοθετικό διάνυσμα στη συνέχεια χρησιμοποιείται ως κατευθυντήριαγραμμή για τον ορισμό μιας κανονικοποιήσιμης υπό συνθήκη πιθανότητας που μηδενίζεται στις κλασσικές ανωμαλίες
