Sorghum bicolor is already mentioned by Pliny the Elder during the 1st c. AD. However its introduction and diffusion in Europe only occurred during the Middle Ages, supposedly in relation with the expansion of the Arabian civilization. Medieval written sources indicate that Sorghum cultivation was already of major importance about 1000 AD in Italy and in the Arabian part of Spain. Most of the archaeobotanical records of Sorghum bicolor are coming from Italy, where the cereal is mentioned in about 20 archaeological sites dated from the 5-6th, 10-11th and 13-14th c. AD.
