When maize (Zea mays L.) first arrived in Europe, it was initially considered to be a new type of small-grained cereal and referred to locally as a millet (Panicum miliaceum L.), panic (Setaria italica L.), or sorghum (Sorghum) depending on the region. Today, these terms are still used to designate maize in many European dialects. This draws attention to the currently underestimated role played by millet and panic as a food product through the early 17th century.
