During the neonatal period, the brain is particularly vulnerable to toxic insults, like the one induced by hyperbilirubinemia. It has been demonstrated that in this condition, high levels of unconjugated bilirubin (UCB) are toxic to endothelial cells, neurons, astrocytes and microglia.
