The present work illustrates the structural and biochemical characterization of two diverse proteins, BadI and MenD from Rhodopseudomonas palustris and Staphylococcus aureus, respectively. BadI or 2-ketocyclohexanecarboxyl-CoA is one of the key enzymes involved in the anaerobic degradation of aromatic compounds. The degradation of aromatic compounds is a vital process for the maintenance of the biogeochemical carbon cycle and bioremediation of xenobiotic compounds, which if present at higher concentrations can cause potential hazards to humans.
