Éditer l’Anthologie latine : problèmes méthodologiques et textuels

The editor of the Latin Anthology is confronted with diverse difficulties: different authors from different times, a unique and very corrupt manuscript for most of the texts, and several levels of textual intervention make that it is difficult to distinguish between possible vulgarisms of the authors (2nd-6th centuries A.D.), those of the first copyist(s) (6th-7th centuries) and those of the copyist of the Salmasianus (8th century), not to mention problems of transmission, variants due to Romance phonetics or real errors of copy. While the text of the Latin Anthology had been corrected too much in the 19th and 20th centuries, by Bährens or Shackleton Bailey through their hypercritical editions, we attempt nowadays to preserve as much as possible the text of the manuscript. The analysis of precise examples will illustrate the difficulties which the edition of this late anthology presents and aims to reach some solutions, in particular by deducing the text’s paleographical stages.Vallat Daniel.
