109 Die In 24 Hours, 1,447 Fresh Cases, Influenza's Record

• In the 24 hour period ending at 11 pm last night, there were 1,447 new cases and 109 deaths, including 74 from influenza, 22 from lobar pneumonia, and 13 from bronchial pneumonia.• On Thursday, there were 1,759 new cases and 92 deaths.• The Truant school will no longer be used for healthy, homeless children; the Watson house has now been offered.• All of the equipment of the Fresh Air mission is available for use for children sick with influenza.• New wards were opened yesterday in the Children’s hospital, and most of them were full by last night.• The children’s Aid Society building will be used for children who have been exposed to influenza, but whose parents are dead or sick, so that they can be taken care of until they recover.• City bacteriologist Dr. William G. Bissell told Dr. Gram that there will be vaccine available by Monday.• It will be provided for free to doctors who would like to use it.• Dept. inspectors closed three stores where individuals who worked there had symptoms.• The control committee re-emphasized the importance of mask-wearing., and store clerks were requested to wear them.• Mask wearing was stressed as an important preventive measure by Dr. Gram, not a “cure-all.”• Tonight, there will be a conference of plant physicians and managers, along with Dr. Gram, to discuss effective preventive measures in factories.• The teachers’ city-wide survey brought many reports to the health dept.• “[The reports] tend to show that the disease is not going beyond all bounds as it has in other cities.”• “Teachers encountered difficulties in the non-English speaking sections so their reports will not be complete…”• Dr. Gram said that football games between Buffalo teams may continue, but warned against crowding.• Dr. Gram said that outside teams may not come to play in Buffalo, and warned against teams leaving to play elsewhere.• The reports from the teachers’ surveys have not been completely calculated, but from 15 districts, there were 1,200 cases reported. • Supt. Hartwell of the dept. of education is recovering from influenza, but his daughter, Mary Alice Hartwell, is sick with it, as well as Marlon Fisher, daughter of Secretary Fisher of the school board.• The importance of mask wearing is stressed again, it is said that the US government and the medical corps of the army and navy, as well as the control committee, stand by the mask’s effectiveness.Newspaper article4,
