1,122 New Cases, 106 Deaths In Day; Epidemic Waning

• In the 24 period ending at 11 pm last night, there were 1,122 new cases and 106 deaths, including 81 from influenza, 10 from bronchial pneumonia, and 15 from lobar pneumonia.• On Monday, there were 1,504 cases and 106 deaths reported, including those that should have been in reports on Sunday.• Ft. Porter is “being cleared up” of army cases, and since the army had a peak of cases a week ahead of Buffalo, it can now release nurses to help elsewhere. If the civilian cases are similar to the army cases, there should be a let up next week, and hospitals should be cleared.• This prediction is based on theory, and preventive measures will not be let up despite the favorable prediction.• Dr. Gram said that the request for women to do housework and nursing work in the homes of people with influenza has not been answered to a great extent. Women who can help with this should report to the dept. of health.• Dr. Gram also issued a “stand by” order to schoolteachers, who have already contributed a great deal of work.• Miss Helen O’Connor and Miss May McDonough have helped out in the health dept. with statistical work.• Dr. Gram has two daughters, who are teachers, who are helping with the efforts against the epidemic.• Many nurses at the Central high school hospital are teachers or Red Cross volunteers.• Yesterday, Dr. Gram was informed that some schoolteachers did not consent to the census work, to which he replied that these were petty, and he is concerned only with the health of the people.• Dr. Gram said the request for schoolteachers had to be made mandatory to make things fair for those who did the work.• Dr. Gram said it would be a waste of city funds to hire people to do this work, when teachers are already being paid, while not being able to do their current job.• As of last night, the following institutions had these numbers of cases: 770 at Municipal hospital, 170 at East Ferry Street, and 125 at the Central High school hospital.• Dr. Goodale said that at the hospital, the death rate was about 10%, but that they often get the worst cases, and cases that have progressed over a few days.• Dr. Goodale commended the Motor Corps Girls, but said that there are not enough cars for transportation right now.• He also said that out of the 500 or more cases at the hospitals, these women transported at least 300 of them to these hospitals.• Women are also preparing sleeping quarters in the hospital for employees, as well as a dining room.• At Ft.
