Epidemic Still Shows Decrease; Only 88 Deaths

• In the 24 hour period ending at 11 pm last night, there were 606 new cases and 88 deaths, including 70 from influenza, 6 from lobar pneumonia, and 12 from bronchial pneumonia.• There were 1,317 new cases and 110 deaths reported on Saturday.• Even though the latest 24 hour period showed a decrease, no reports were received in the mail yesterday, and the 606 reported were done by telephone. But, this was a decrease in the telephone reported cases from Friday or Saturday.• Health Commissioner Franklin C. Gram said that stores selling food and market stalls not complying with sanitation rules will have actions taken against them.• People have made complaints about unsanitary conditions in food stores, so inspectors are today going to check all stores rand market stalls to make sure they are sanitary, otherwise they will be closed. This includes anywhere food is sold.• Saturday and yesterday stores were closed because sick people were found to be working with customers in the stores, if any “sickness was found.”• The Health Commissioner said that this order was to be put into effect immediately.• Yesterday’s rainstorms caused Dr. Gram to cancel school activities involving field work (i. e. the survey).• At least 90% of cases are shown to have been reported in the census.• The Central High school emergency hospital has helped greatly in reducing crowding in the other city hospitals.• This morning, there were about 200 patients in the Central High school hospital. By tomorrow, it will be able to accommodate 400 patients, and by the end of the week, 1,000.• Today, the city bacteriologist Dr. Bissell will have enough vaccine to distribute, in addition to a large supply that was sent from the New York state dept. of health.• The vaccine is freely being distributed to physicians, and is to be used as a prophylactic only, and is not a cure.• Dr. Gram has said, of the quarantine, that it is better to be safe than sorry, and will maintain the drastic measures in place until the epidemic is known to have passed.• Dr. Gram has received many wires/letters from other towns and cities asking about Buffalo’s measures, and he has addressed these, saying that health authorities must cooperate with each other now.• Health Commissioner, doctors, and nurses have been worked very hard during this epidemic.• The article thanks the control committee, advisors to the Health commissioner, the Mayor and his council, Chief of Police Girvin, hospital staff, and so on, and all citizens who have “directly or indirectly” help to fight against influenza.Newspaper article
