Ask Met Aid In Influenza

• A statement issued by Dr. E. H. Bullock, health director, quoted by the Star; Dr. Bullock warns that influenza is spread by spitting, coughing, and sneezing in public places; he recommends that handkerchiefs be used with care, particularly in motion picture theaters, street cars, and other public places; he recommends that people avoid public places and that people with colds should not appear in public places; he describes the symptoms of influenza, including chills severe headache, flushed face, sore throat, a fever of 101 to 104, red eyes, a white and swollen tongue, and bad breath; he recommends bed rest, fresh air, and abundant food as the best treatment• It is noted that numerous deaths and many cases have likely gone unreported; death reports do not have to be immediate, but must be filed before burial• Dr. Gannon, head of the contagious disease department, said that congestion in crowded street cars is one of the primary causes of the spread the disease and should be ended; Gannon has made a formal request to the Metropolitan that it prohibit crowded cars, permitting only 15 people to stand in the aisles and vestibules, limiting thus the total capacity to 65 people in larger cars; Gannon is also trying to get William G. Busby, Jefferson City, Chairman of the Public Service Commission, to order the street car company to use every available car• Dr. Bullock said that forbidding crowding in street cars may be necessary, but such an order is not needed yet; A.F. Smith, Assistant City Counselor, said that the Hospital and Health Board has the authority to limit the number of passengers in street cars as an emergency measure• Dr. Gannon has started a campaign for cleanliness; several deputies have been notifying theaters, churches, hotels, and rooming houses, via telephone, that they must sweep and scrub their buildings, using disinfectant, before any gathering; department stores and offices have been told to do the same in elevators; street cars must similarly be cleaned before they leave the car barn, and must be swept again at the end of each trip; signs reading “Unfit for Human Habitation, by Order of Hospital and Health Board” have been ordered to be placed on places that fail to comply• The isolation ward at the General Hospital is filled to capacity with the admission of 13 new cases today; there are 49 total cases there and one case was discharged yesterday; new cases will have to be treated with home quarantine according to Dr. Bullock; the health board has been offered the use of the Old St. Joseph Hospital Building, but it does not possess the equipment or nurses necessary to utilize itNewspaper article
