Rain Counted Aid In Fighting Influenza

• Statement from Drs. Abele and Seeley: “It has been discovered that some cases of influenza remains carriers of the infection for a period of two weeks and in one particular instance it was definitely traced for three weeks. It is impossible to state how long any given case might remain a carrier, but, in view of the above, we feel that all influenza cases coming in contact with unexposed persons should wear masks, and that all persons coming in contact with the sick should wear masks. Masks should be of eight layers of gauze or four of butter cloth. Masks should be sterilized after three hours’ use. This can be accomplished by boiling for five minutes.”• Physicians believe the recent rain will help fight the spread of influenza. • The Ministerial Association suggests that the health authorities close all theatres, churches, schools, dances, and lodges for thirty days. (Their resolutions are provided at the end of the article.) Dr. Sommer met with representatives from the organization. He promises to carefully consider their suggestions and adopt any appropriate measures. • Dr. Sommer does not believe the city should be closed down (as suggested by the Ministerial Association). He does not believe that Portland should be closed unless all other measures fail. • Dr. Sommer: “The epidemic is under check. The new cases reported are fewer each day and with the moderation of the weather, I think the outlook is favorable.”• The compulsory mask ordinance was stopped by City Commissioner Mann’s “blockade.” An educational campaign is being created that will encourage people to wear the masks voluntarily.• Dr. Sommer issued instructions to transportation workers about the proper ventilation of streetcars.• There was a drop in the number of new cases reported yesterday. This is a lower number than there has been for the past ten days. • Physicians have been provided with special cards so that they may record the complications that result from influenza. It is hoped that the information will help prevent or alleviate future epidemics. • Barracks at the County Hospital will be ready for use on Sunday.
