Dr. Baer Flu Cure Given To Public By Him

• In response to inquiries, Dr. Baer of Pittsburg, made public the formula for his influenza prevention solution. (It is not a serum, according to Dr. Baer.) It composed of 1.54 grams of iodine in a sterile solution with creosote and guaiacol. The solution is injected intravenously. Dr. Baer claims patients experience few side effects. • Number of new cases of influenza shows “a slight falling off from the number reported the previous day.”• Chief of Police Mooney received a dozen anti-influenza masks from City Health Department. They are to be used in cases of emergency by patrolmen. Often the patrol wagons are used as ambulances. • Charles Weinberger, chief of the New Orleans division of the American Protective League, offered the league’s new building to the city for use during the influenza epidemic. The home should be ready in 24 hours. It has 50 beds in the dormitory. The mayor is expected to accept his offer. He will first need to discuss the matter with the Board of Health. Dr. Dowling sent telegram to Surgeon General Blue. Dowling believes extra measures are needed. Asks Blue to ban unnecessary travel. Dowling believes all places with non-essential services (i.e. ice cream parlors) should be closed and stores should only offer necessary items. • Dr. G. N. Corput appointed general medical advisor by Blue to “advise and act in conjunction with local health authorities during the influenza epidemic.”• Dr. Dowling is concerned that businesses leave their windows closed over the weekend. He believes the windows should be left open on all days to keep buildings well ventilated until the epidemic is over. • Labor organizations asked Dr. Dowling if the ban on public meetings included their organizations’ meetings. Dowling forwarded their request to the Public Health Service for advice and asked for a “positive ruling.”• Dr. M. M. Smith of Dallas, TX told Dr. Dowling through a telegram that the Medical Association of the Southwest will hold its meeting in Dallas on October 15th, 16th, and 17th. The 17th will be devoted to a discussion of Spanish influenza and its complications. Dr. Dowling replied that he does not approve of the meeting at this time. • Dr. Dowling responds to Reverend Dr. Bakewell’s protest against the closure of churches. Dowling says that he believes churches should be closed if other public places are. Churchgoers come from all over the city and may be carriers of the disease, he says. They are not always careful to cover their mouths or nose when they cough or sneeze. • Dowling: “Influenza is epidemic. The city, state and national health authorities are doing their utmost to control the spread. Adverse criticisms only block efforts. There is no objection to ministers visiting those in distress.
