Dally With An Epidemic

• Dr. Bullock, superintendent of the Hospital and Health Board, insisted that the epidemic was not yet dangerous• Six new cases arrived at the isolation ward of the General Hospital, maxing its capacity; one patient was refused admittance due to lack of space• No measures, other than the request that all theaters, churches, restaurants, stores, and public places scrub and fumigate their buildings each night and that street cars be similarly cleaned and swept, have been taken according to Dr. Bullock• Dr. Gannon, after the report of new cases, announced yesterday that he would go to the limit of his authority to check the spread of influenza; he called the city counselor to learn what he could do to limit crowding in street cars; after being informed that the mayor could declare an emergency, thus giving authority to act to the health department, Gannon called the mayor requesting him to do so• Dr. Bullock, minutes after Gannon’s call to the mayor, appeared at Gannon’s office and ordered him to “request” instead of order the street cars to limit capacity• Dr. Gannon and his staff will work all day today quarantining new cases and fumigating where patients have been removed• Bullock issued a list of rules for prevention which include: staying out of crowds, avoiding dust, keeping bowels active with laxatives, keeping kidneys active by drinking plenty of water, staying away from the sick, consulting a physician and remaining at home upon signs of illness, getting plenty of sleep, keeping warm by properly dressing, and spraying the nose and gargling the throat 3 times a day with a solution of one part glycothymolene and two parts water, or one part Listerine and two parts water, or table salt and waterNewspaper article2
