Taking Steps To Fight Epidemic

*By the end of the week, the city will be able to care for flu patients at the isolation hospital off of West Meadow Road and in the little children’s hospital connected with the Chelmsford Street Hospital. *The 3 pavilions of the isolation hospital will contain 24 beds each, but will be able to accommodate 100 patients if necessary. The sewerage and heating systems of the hospitals are being set up as quickly as possible. Mayor Perry D. Thompson and Commissioners Morse and Warnock are collaborating to set up the hospital.*The Chelmsford Street Hospital will be able to accommodate 12-14 patients.*Discussion of cases: figure seems high, but it is likely that many of them will return to work very soon.*According to Rachel Barrington, Superintendent of the Lowell Guild, the epidemic is more prevalent in Lower Pawtucketville than in any other section of the city. The six Guild nurses and three Board of Health nurses are making home visits. Barrington asks that people call the Guild if they are unable to reach physicians, even if they cannot afford care. *Many patients are not receiving any care at all, or are being cared for by untrained relatives.*The City Board of Health met yesterday to discuss the situation. Dr. Pierre Brunelle has contracted flu and thus was not present. Acting chairman Dr. Carroll proposed that churches urge parishioners not to congregate during the epidemic. Moreover, in order to prevent crowds at funerals, undertakers were asked not to bring chairs to homes of the bereaved.*Superintendent of Schools Hugh J.
