A1M Fletton Parkway to Stamford: An Archaeological Field Survey 1993

This field survey was commissioned by The ASH Consulting Group, acting as consultants to Kirkpatrick and Partners, Consulting Engineers to the Department of Transport Eastern Region. The project consists of an initial, rapid fieldwalking survey of the archaeology of an irregular route corridor approximately 2 kilometres wide extending from the A605/Fletton Parkway junction (Peterborough) northwest to Stamford, a distance of 23 kilometres. This route corridor was the subject of a desk-based study (Wait 1992). The purpose of this initial field survey is to examine sections of the route corridor which were considered to have good archaeological potential to contain sites but which have not been previously surveyed. Inherent in this is the recognition that this is not a full or complete survey or field assessment, and therefore detailed surface collection was not appropriate in all cases. This phase is intended to supplement the information available in county SMRs and allow more informed decisions about possible route lines within the corridor to be considered. A second phase of field assessment and excavation will be required to assess the impact of the proposed road works along the A1(M) upon the archaeological heritage. Two particular sections were, after consultation with the ASH Group, given detailed consideration. A route option exists departing from the present Al at 'Kate's Cabin' north of Chesterton, and thereafter passing about 0.5 km south of the Al, converging on and crossing to the northeast of the A l west of Sibson, and continuing on the northeast to rejoin the present line just south of Wittering
