Well known in the West as mission preachers, the « Montfortains » have remained a modest sized congregation for a long time : a dozen or so in the XVIIIth century, fîfty-five in 1880, with the exclusion of the manual brothers, then four times more numerous, which makes it a singular clerical institute. This small growth is due partly to the lack of personnalities, except Gabriel Deshayes, between 1822 and 1841, who distorted the original direction.
