The social pattern of Ngazidja island shows a matrilineal filiation and a uxori-matrilocality. Islam started long ago in the Comoros : the system of social values that it imposes sometimes contradicts regular customs, but most of the time it matches with them. Social stratification still makes it possible to find out the former noble class, free people, fishermen and slaves. In residential units, those born from free people organise very well structured rituals dealing with customary exchanges.
