Abstract In her major work, L'organisation sociale des Peul (1970), M. Dupire emphasizes two peculiarities to the Ferlo Fulani of Senegal : the division of society between éligibles and electors ; and the importance of uterine kin within patrilineal descent groups. This paper shows how these two phenomena are connected in the Senegal River Valley ; marriage records from two villages of semi-sedentarised Fulani (Meri and Cooka) are analyzed. Social differences between éligibles and electors and marriage cycles over several generations account for the permanence of a peculiar, local political organisation, which is found in Ferlo as well as in the Middle Senegal Valley.Résumé Dans son ouvrage majeur L'organisation sociale des Peul (1970) M.
