From Moroni to Mukalla: Hadhramis on the island of Ngazidja (Comoros) and in the Hadhramhout

Hadhramis on the island of Ngazidja (Comoros) have taken advantage of the specificities of the local social structures to develop strategies that enable them to integrate with the Ngazidja population while at the same time retaining a distinct identity as a community. This is particularly evident in marriage patterns, but also in their participation in the costly aada system. Maintaining an identity as a community is both facilitated by and permits the maintenance of links with other members of the Hadhrami diaspora in Eastern Africa and with the Hadhramhout itself. As a result, the Hadhrami community itself has developed an identity that may be characterised as a spatially mobile community rather than a specifically emigrant one.Grâce aux spécificités sociales de l'île de Ngazidja (Comores), les Hadhrami ont pu développer des stratégies qui leur permettent de s'intégrer à la population locale tout en conservant une identité en tant que communauté distincte ; ceci est particulièrement évident dans leurs choix matrimoniaux, mais aussi dans leur participation au aada, système coutumier fort coûteux. Leur identité collective en tant que communauté découle de leurs réseaux d'interactions avec d'autres Hadhrami en Afrique orientale et dans le Hadhramhout.
