Architecture Against Loneliness : The importance of living spaces and how they can better the mental health and loneliness of young adults

Young adults are in today’s modern world more alone than ever before as a result of multiple factors. Loneliness in general in Finland has been declining, but loneliness in young adults has not, in fact the number of young adults who feel lonely has been increasing. In Finland people don’t have as many places for public gatherings and the climate for the most part is not ideal for that, so we are naturally more isolated because we spend more time indoors than in countries with a warmer climate. Due to the constant rise of digitalization and remote work, we are more removed from others physically and emotionally than before. Also, the increasing number of studio apartments that are being built today in large cities don’t give many people other chances than to live alone. Young adults, who in most cases tend to be either students or otherwise don’t necessarily have a large income yet, don’t have much of a choice or say in the way that they are living. To study more deeply the loneliness in young adults, the first part of the thesis focuses on theory and the reasonings behind the issue. It is important to notice the effects of loneliness because bettering people’s mental health has also societal benefits. After the theory part, there are architectural case studies from which we can point out problematic qualities or otherwise such characteristics in housing design that do not complement or take loneliness into account. From these case studies there are excerpts picked out as sort of design guidelines, which are then used when approaching the design phase of the thesis. In this phase, there is an existing student apartment building that is redesigned to showcase how we can with the same default starting points have better and more engaging living environment for young adults. Then lastly, from these redesigns and the theory part, a tool pack is collected which includes characteristics or qualities of spaces that can be used by others when designing housing for especially young adults. Recurring things from the redesigns, such as functions, types of apartments, spaces and their proportions, sizes, and disposition with the previously collected excerpts were then combined into the tool pack. There are tools with for example measurements of apartments and shared spaces, different scale shared spaces with suggested functions, and also guidelines to arranging or modifying spaces to make them adaptable and therefore also more sustainable and interesting to the user. What was concluded from the whole process was that the existing frame depth of the existing building combined with the high number of inhabitants, achieving the same number of inhabitants with the same frame depth but also with better living conditions is almost impossible. There had to be some adjustments made to the existing structure to allow some changes made to ease the learning process of the design phase. Many of the common spaces in apartments, such as kitchens, were still dark or small as in the existing building. There were improvements in both the shared spaces and the apartments but the main notion from the whole process was that we cannot make living spaces that aim to reduce loneliness and better mental health with these kinds of conditions, especially with so deep apartments and frame depth in general. We need to start thinking more about the quality of living rather than the number of apartments. Not only does this improve the inhabitants’ quality of life, but it is also more sustainable for all of us in the long run.Nuoret aikuiset ovat nykypäivän modernissa maailmassa enemmän yksin kuin koskaan monen eri tekijän vaikutuksesta. Yksinäisyys Suomessa on yleisesti ollut laskussa, mutta nuorten aikuisten keskuudessa ei, päinvastoin yksinäisyyden tunteet ovat nuorten aikuisten keskuudessa olleet vain nousussa. Suomessa ihmisillä ei ole kovin paljon julkisia paikkoja kerääntymisille ja ilmasto ei suurimman osan ajasta ole siihen otollinen. Tästä syystä olemme luonnollisesti enemmän eristyksissä muista, koska vietämme enemmän aikaa sisätiloissa verrattuna muihin maihin, joissa on lämpimämpi ilmasto. Jatkuvan digitalisaation kasvun ja etätyöskentelyn johdosta siirrymme koko ajan etäämmäksi muista ihmisistä fyysisesti sekä henkisesti. Tämän lisäksi yksiöitä rakennetaan kaupunkialueille yhä enemmän ja enemmän, minkä takia suurella osalla ihmisistä ei ole mahdollisuutta elää muuten kuin yksin. Nuoret aikuiset, jotka ovat suurelta osin joko opiskelijoita, tai ylipäätään aikuisia, joilla ei välttämättä ole vielä suuret tulot, heillä ei ole paljon valinnanvaraa, miten he asuvat. Jotta pystytään tutkimaan tarkemmin yksinäisyyttä nuorten aikuisten keskuudessa, ensimmäinen osa diplomityötä keskittyy teoriaan ja yksinäisyysongelman syihin. On tärkeää huomata yksinäisyyden vaikutukset, koska ihmisten henkisen hyvinvoinnin parantamisella on myös yhteiskunnallisia vaikutuksia. Teoriaosuuden jälkeen siirrytään arkkitehtonisiin esimerkkeihin ja tapaustutkimuksiin, joiden avulla voidaan tuoda esiin ongelmallisia piirteitä tai ominaisuuksia asuntosuunnittelussa, jotka eivät ota yksinäisyyttä huomioon. Näistä tapaustutkimuksista poimitaan huomioita suunnittelulinjoiksi, joita käytetään, kun diplomityön suunnitteluvaihe alkaa. Tässä vaiheessa olemassa oleva kerrostalo uudelleen suunnitellaan, jotta voidaan ehdottaa, kuinka samoilla lähtökohdilla voidaan tehdä parempaa ja enemmän asukasta huomioonottavampaa asumista nuorille aikuisille. Lopuksi näistä uusista suunnitelmista teoriaosuuden kanssa luodaan työkalupakki, joka sisältää tilojen ominaisuuksia ja piirteitä, joita voidaan hyödyntää jatkossa, kun suunnitellaan asumista erityisesti nuorille aikuisille. Toistuvia asioita, kuten erilaisia toimintoja, asuntotyyppejä, tiloja ja niiden mittasuhteita, kokoja sekä sijoitteluja koottiin yhteen työkalupakkiin teoriaosuudessa poimittujen huomioiden kanssa. Työkalupakki sisältää työkaluja esimerkiksi asuntojen ja yhteistilojen mittoihin, eri mittakaavaisia yhteistiloja, joihin on ehdotettu erilaisia toimintoja, sekä suunnittelulinjoja, kuinka järjestellä tai muokata tiloja tehden niistä eri tilanteisiin sopeutuvia. Tämä tekee tiloista myös kestävämpiä sekä kiinnostavampia käyttäjälle. Mitä pystyttiin päättelemään koko prosessista oli, että olemassa olevan rakennuksen runkosyvyys yhdistettynä suureen määrään asukkaita, saman asukasmäärän saavuttaminen samoilla lähtökohdilla, mutta vielä paremmilla elinolosuhteilla on melkein mahdotonta. Olemassa olevaan rakennukseen oli tehtävä joitakin rakenteellisia muutoksia, jotta pystyttiin helpottamaan oppimisprosessia suunnitteluvaiheessa. Monet yhteistilat asuntojen sisällä, kuten keittiöt, jäivät silti joissain tapauksissa pimeiksi tai hyvin pieniksi, kuten olemassa olevassa rakennuksessa. Parannuksia tehtiin yleisesti sekä yhteistiloihin, että asuntoihin, mutta päähuomio koko työssä oli, että emme pysty luomaan elintilaa, jonka tarkoitus on vähentää yksinäisyyttä ja parantaa henkistä hyvinvointia näissä olosuhteissa, etenkin hyvin syvillä asunnoilla ja runkosyvyydellä. Meidän pitää alkaa ajattelemaan ennemmin elämisen laatua kuin asuntojen lukumäärää. Tämä ei ainoastaan paranna ihmisten elämän laatua, vaan on kestävämpää meille kaikille
