Plan beats waterlogging, salinity

The Rundle family of Katanning are reaping the rewards of implementing a whole of farm water management plan to address encroaching salinity and water logging. The Rundle's determined that the benefits far outweighed the eight percent lost in farming land, that was used to make way for drains, trees and remnant vegetation. By the mid-1980's it was decided a whole farm approach was needed to stop the spread of salinity and waterlogging. Frankland farmer, Ron Watkins, surveyed the farm and developed a plan with the Rundles spending the next 12 years implementing the on-ground work. The plan was a complete redesign of the farm that ignored the existing fencing line and identified several sites for new dams and 27 kilometres of contour banks.
