Battling salinity by bank system

Salinity control feature article explains former president of WISALTS, Mr. Lex Hardie acknowledged that while some of his own level banks were adding water to the throughflow, the overall water control system he introduced onto his farm was the best possible concept to alleviate his salt problem. Mr. Hardie said he used the best means of water control with contemporary technology and know-how, according to the conditions which prevail on his property. Mr. Hardie continues, noting that level interceptor banks and grade interceptor banks have been chiselled into the hills to help "dry out" some of the black oozing salt sores on the lowlands. The infrastructure for long-term rehabilitation had been put into place, and the benefits were evident during normal winter seasons where the soil became saturated and the banks picked up a lot of sub-soil water Mr. Hardie said he believed the salinity problem is not caused by the upward movement of deep groundwater but by the down-slope movement of water in the throughflow and above the hardpan.
