Mitochondria are cellular organelles participating actively in energy production, signal transduction and apoptosis. They are characterized by a sophisticated structure essential for hosting the multiple mitochondrial functions. An outer membrane defines the border of the organelle and the cytoplasm, while an inner membrane compartmentalizes the internal space into intermembrane space, matrix and cristae.
