The article discusses specific aspects of leadership of the first level manager (FLM) in workgroup together with issues of his development as a leader. Leaders work is more effective when their skills correspond with management level. Importance of leadership skills for the first level manager indicates that learned skills are the most important for effective leadership. Applying R. L. Katz (1955) three-skills approach a survey was made in two manufacturing companies on specific skills of the first level managers-leaders and formation of leadership competence through skills and dynamics of skills.
