Both in school grammars and in Morphological textbooks little attention is paid to the morphological features of personal proper names. In view of this gap, this article presents an exploratory study based on IBGE data about the most popular first names during the period from before 1930 to 2000. In the sample formed by the union of lists of first names generated by IBGE, there are 13 suffixes in masculine anthroponomy and 13 in female, and some names formed by agglutinating composition. The analysis of the value of use of each ending showed that while the female morpheme -a predominates in feminine names, there is frequent use of the morphemes zero, -el , -ão and -os in masculine names.
