Composting of septic and agricultural residues in different aeration systems

Treatment and final disposal of solid urban waste have always been a concern to governmental and non-governmental organizations related to the environmental sanitation area. With the publication of the law number 12305/2010 this concern has increased, as there is a target to reduce organic solid waste shipment to landfills. Thus, composting has been gaining ground in the national scenario once this technic can treat a large part of organic solid waste, hence improving its quality and giving it the possibility of being reused in agriculture, contributing to reduce the amount of this type of residue disposal in landfills. For this reason, our aim was to verify the final quality of the dewatered septic waste, cow manure and poultry litter composted with pruning from trees, and additionally to study the effect of different aeration systems during the process. Statistical scheme adopted was based on a factorial 2 X 3 X 5, with two aeration systems (forced aeration using aerogenerators and mechanic aeration using tractors), three types of residues (septic sludge, cow manure and poultry litter) and five composting periods (0, 30, 60, 90 and 120 days) being evaluated with three replicates. This study demonstrated that composting is an ecological solution to be implemented in the cities and mechanical aeration system was the best technique to obtain a higher quality compost. Based on the results found, septic sludge, cow manure and poultry litter are residues that enhance plant germination and growth. Regarding the microbiological quality, septic sludge and cow manure were free of any contamination after 120 days of composting. Mantis, Voultsa, and Samara (2005) classify solid waste regarding its ecotoxicity in four classes. In this work, cow manure and septic sludge belong to class 1 and do not have significant ecotoxicity, while poultry litter belongs to class 2 and has significant ecotoxicity. Substrate 2 made of cow manure and septic sludge and substrate 4 made of septic sludge and poultry litter provided higher growth and development in seedlings of Golden Trumpet Tree and Cedar. The crushed coconut, used as structurant, performed better as structurant when compared to tree pruning.O tratamento e a destinação final dos resíduos sólidos urbanos sempre foi uma preocupação das organizações governamentais e não governamentais ligadas à área de saneamento ambiental. Com a publicação da lei 12.305/2010 essa preocupação aumentou, pois existe uma meta onde os resíduos sólidos orgânicos deverão ter o seu envio reduzido para os aterros. Frente a isso, a compostagem vem ganhando espaço no cenário nacional, pois a mesma é capaz de tratar boa parte dos resíduos sólidos orgânicos, melhorando assim a qualidade dos mesmos e dando-lhes a possibilidade de serem reaproveitados na agricultura e assim contribuindo para reduzir o envio desse tipo de resíduo para os aterros. Neste sentido, o objetivo deste trabalho foi verificar a qualidade final do lodo séptico desaguado, esterco bovino e cama de frango compostados com a poda de árvore, além de estudar o efeito de diferentes sistemas de aeração durante o processo. O esquema estatístico adotado foi disposto com base em um fatorial 2 x 3 x 5, onde se avaliaram dois sistemas de aeração (aeração forçada por aerogeradores e aeração natural com trator), três tipos de resíduos (lodo séptico, esterco bovino e cama de frango) e cinco períodos de compostagem (0, 30, 60, 90 e 120 dias), com três repetições. Com o estudo foi constatado que a compostagem é uma solução ecológica para ser implantada nas cidades e o sistema de aeração natural foi o que ajudou na obtenção de um composto com maior qualidade. O lodo séptico, esterco bovino e a cama de frango são resíduos que favorecem a germinação e o crescimento das plantas. Em relação à qualidade microbiológica, o lodo séptico e o esterco bovino apresentaram-se livres de quaisquer quantidades de contaminantes após os 120 dias de compostagem. Mantis, Voultsa e Samara (2005) classificam os resíduos sólidos quanto sua ecotoxicidade em quatro classes. Neste trabalho, o esterco bovino e o lodo séptico pertencem à classe 1 e não possuem ecotoxicidade significativa, enquanto que a cama de frango já pertence à classe 2 e possui ecotoxicidade significativa. O substrato 2 à base de esterco bovino e lodo séptico e o 4 à base de lodo séptico e cama de frango proporcionaram maiores crescimento e desenvolvimento das mudas de Ipê Amarelo e Cedro.
