Porter was born in Lawrenceburg in 1824. As governor he had marshlands surveyed and drained to reclaim 800,000 acres of land. He improved conditions for miners, created the State Board of Health, and supported women’s rights. He implemented a flood relief program when the Ohio and Wabash rivers overflowed in 1883. Later he was U.S. Minister to Italy. He died in Indianapolis in 1897 and is buried in Crown Hill Cemetery.Use of this image is restricted to IHS reference purposes only. IHS may not reproduce.
