Morton was born in 1823 in Wayne County, the first Indiana governor born in the state. As governor during the Civil War, he raised a large number of troops for the Union and established a state arsenal. Known as the “soldiers’ friend,” he created a system of relief and medical care. He was also known for devious political tactics. While serving as U.S. senator, he died in 1877. He is buried in Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis.Use of this image is restricted to IHS reference purposes only. IHS may not reproduce.
