Born in Vermont in 1814, Hammond moved to Brookville at age 6. He was a lawyer in Terre Haute when he became lieutenant governor, and became governor upon Willard’s death, serving the last few months of his term. His primary concern was preservation of the Union and preventing civil war. Later he stayed in Indianapolis until ill health took him to Denver where he died in 1874.
