‘Dancing Between Raindrops’: Politics Education in the Sultanate of Oman 2012–2019

Drawing on a five‑year participant‑observer study the evolution of politics education in the Sultanate of Oman from 2012 to 2019 is discussed. The aim is to shed light on the significance and implications of new explicitly politics‑related curricula introduced at Sultan Qaboos University shortly after ‘Arab Spring’ protests shook the country in 2011. The argument is presented that Oman stands at a pivotal juncture in its education policy in the humanities and the social sciences. The choice is between retreating into the type of state‑centric and uncritical curricula common among the authoritarian systems of the Middle East and North Africa, or continuing the partial opening of an educational evolution that could more effectively equip the next generation of Omani leaders to help face challenges that lie ahead.L'évolution de l'enseignement du politique dans le Sultanat d'Oman de 2012 à 2019 est ici analysée à partir d'une observation participante de cinq années. L'objectif est de mettre en lumière l'importance et les implications des nouveaux programmes explicitement liés aux disciplines du politique, introduits à l'université du Sultan Qaboos peu après les manifestations du « Printemps arabe » qui ont secoué le pays en 2011. L'argument présenté est que l'Oman se trouve à un moment charnière de sa politique éducative dans le domaine des sciences humaines et sociales. L’alternative entre le repli sur des programmes centrés sur l'État et non critiques, courant dans les systèmes autoritaires du Moyen‑Orient et de l'Afrique du Nord, et la poursuite de l'ouverture partielle vers un enseignement qui permettrait de mieux armer la prochaine génération de dirigeants omanais afin de faire face aux défis qui les attendent, constitue l’enjeu abordé par cet article.يقوم المقال بتحليل تطور تعليم السياسة في سلطنة عمان استنادًا إلى منهجية ملاحظة المشارك خلال خمس سنوات، ويهدف من ذلك إلى تسليط الضوء على أهمية البرامج الجديدة ذات الارتباط الواضح بالمواد السياسية وأثرها، والتي اضيفت في جامعة السلطان قابوس بعد مظاهرات "الربيع العربي" بوقت قصير والتي هزت البلاد في عام 2011. وتتمثل الحُجة المقدمة في أن عُمان تجد نفسها أمام منعطف مفصلي في سياستها التعليمية في مجال العلوم الإنسانية والاجتماعية. ويعتبر الاختيار بين الانكفاء على برامج غير نقدية تتمحور حول الدولة، وهي شائعة في الأنظمة الاستبدادية في الشرق الاوسط وشمال أفريقيا، ومواصلة الانفتاح الجزئي على التعليم الذي قد يسمح بإعداد الجيل القادم من القادة العمانيين بصورة أفضل لمواجهة التحديات التي تنتظرهم، هو المحور الذي يناقشه هذا المقال
