Compared to other linguistic traditions, the role and works of women translators in Italy have received less scholarly attention: yet some women actively contributed to the field of translation, often doing so for the benefit of other women, or for the less learned. This article explores the subject of women translators in early modern Italy, against the background of the varied and complex linguistic situation of the peninsula. It examines in particular the role women played in the circulation and dissemination of knowledge as translators of texts from (and into) the classical languages: Latin, Greek and Hebrew
