Evoked potentials are critical in determining audiologic thresholds in children too young for traditional behavioral methods and in other difficult-to-test populations. The ABR (Auditory Brainstem Response), a method being used during the last 50 years, is currently widely recognized as the most effective evoked potential technique. Click and tone-burst ABRs are commonly used to estimate auditory sensitivity in infants and children too young for other test methods. ABR recordings are limited, however, by restrictions on maximum presentation levels and by the subjective visual inspection method used to determine threshold, whereas tone-burst recordings are often more challenging to interpret because waveforms can be less distinctive.
