- 2 - Concerning the present situation in Cairo the President said he would he meeting individually next week with some faculty members who had expressed concern to him* He went on to say that the Egyptian government looks favourably on the University, wishes it to thrive and is fully aware of its responsibility for the personal security of all foreigners in Egypt and this of course includes the staff of the University. At the same time of course the diplomatic missions are also concerned for the security of their own nationals. The President said that he maintained close and ongoing consultation with the U.S. mission, that is the U.S. Interest Section of the Spanish Embassy. The President went on to say that on March 2nd, there might Tie some demonstrations and he emphasized that if there were any steps which should be taken by foreign faculty the foreign faculty would be notified through the liaison personnel. The President also expressed apprehension that should the sale of further phantoms to Israel be announced, there might be an emotional reaction in Egypt and throughout the Middle East. The President stated he would be in contact with the Egyptian Government and the U.S. Interests Section about the steps which should be taken in this eventuality. In such a situation it might be advisable for foreign faculty to stay out of sight for a day or so. ) The President concluded by saying that the foreigners who were here in 1967 would recall that under conditions of far greater tension they had been treated courteously an
