Reporting: Ms. Bennison 1. The agenda was approved as presented. 2. The minutes of the last meeting were approved. 3. A.u.c. Press (Information Paper and Co~ents) Arnold Tovell reported first on the progress of the A.U.C. Press. He informed the Board of a new press scheme called the Larry Collins Project in which the author named has offered to donate a book for translation into Arabic. The author's royalties from the book's sale are to be ploughed back into A.U.C. Press to be used to translate Arabic authors into English. It is projected that this could raise as much as $5,000 per title. The plan is proceeding and some concrete advances should be made by May. It was hoped that this would lead to other authors making similar arrangements with A.U.C. Press. The A.U.C. Press would then become a regional, not just Egyptian, force. Translators will be hired in Cairo with two possible sources being the translating service of al-Abram and the Egyptian Cultural Organization. Although the question had asked whether a light American novel was suitable to be translated by the University Press, Mr. Tovell pointed out that few people notice the publisher of a book and that the ends, i.e. increased funds for scholarly translations into English justified the means. In any case AUC would be careful about the titles chosen. Compliments on the Press's progress were passed, particularly in regard to the publication of the Naguib Mahfouz novels
