MINUTES THE AMERICAN UNIVERSITY TN CAIRO BOARD OF TRUSTEES Adult Education Committee May 23, 1984 River Club Attending: Mr. Hannon, Mr. Hyde, Mrs. Sage. Reporter: Mrs. Bartlett Chair: Mr. Hyde. Mr. Hyde reported that there are three areas of concern: the DPS, the CIT, and the Press. In regard to the Department of Public Service, Mr. Hyde noted that everything is going along well. He did mention that there have been discussions in Egypt among AID, the Ministry of Education, and DPS/AUC about the possibility of AUC ex-tending its English language training to areas outside of Cairo. Issues of whether the targeted students would be individual Egyptians or Egyptian teachers of English, of how the program should be funded, and where the programs would be stationed are all subject to discussion and negotiation. But Mr. Hyde and Dr. Pedersen want the Board to know that the Egyptian government, in the form of the Ministry of Education,is very enthusiastic about AUC's reaching out to "provincial capitals" for English training. As for the Center for Industrial Training (CIT), it is with regret that the committee acknowledged the departure of its able administrator, Mr. Peter Beckschi. Dr. Ralph Nelson is looking for his replacement and thinks it might be an Egyptian. The Press, under Mr. Linz's direction, is looking at a loss, for several years. It apparently will not rdh at full capacity for years, contrary to predictions. There are a number of new, competitive presses in Cairo now. (This was not the case just a few years ago.) Mr. Hyde requests that Mr. Linz give the Board a realistic report of the prospects of profitability of the press. Dr. Bayley Winder requests that Mr. Linz address the Board on his views on the role of the press as an academic press. The appointment of Mrs. Omneya Kassabgy to permanent status was approved by the Board. Dr. Pedersen said he would notify Dr. Nelson of Board approval but would remind Dr. Nelson that Mrs. Kassabgy is the third person out of five to be given permanent status. Therefore, no one else in the category of English Language Coordinator can be granted permanent status because three out of five constitutes 60% of that category, 60% being the percentage of faculty granted permanent status is each department
