Contingency Planning - Dr. McDonald reported on the "Emergency Management Plan" and the steps taken to provide for the security of the University and the safety of its personnel in the event of problems in ~. Cairo from the Gulf crisis. Dr. Eilts said that it was his understanding and experience that the U.S. Embassy in Cairo had a plan which would organize and implement any evacuation from Cairo should events warrant it. Dr. McDonald said that the Embassy was aware of AUC's plan and had not advised the University that it had a plan of its own which would include AUC staff and students. Further, since AUC had many non-American faculty and students on its staff, it was prudent to have developed a plan which would provide for them as well as Ameri­can nationals. 9. Miscellaneous - a. Nominating Committee Mr. Hedlund reported that since he was the only member of the Nominating Committee at­tending the Board meeting, no formal committee meeting was held. He reported that he and Dr. Lamont had met with Dr. Robert A. Oden and he recommended that the Executive Com­mittee confmn Dr. Oden's appointment as an AUC Trustee. Two other candidates were cur­rently under consideration: Ellen Perry (recommended by Lach Reed) and Bruce Ludwig (recommended by Boyd Hight). He said that he understood Ellen Perry was a member of a wealthy Florida family, the Colli­ers. Kelly Simpson said that he knew Miles Collier, a member of that family, and would try to get his view of Mrs. Perry. Mr. Hedlund said that, in any event, Mrs. Perry might be too young (32 years old) to be nominated, particularly since it might cause problems with the AUC Associates. He said that many of the Trustees had had the opportunity meet with Bruce Ludwig who at­tended the Board reception on November 15 and asked Dr. Lamont to get the reactions of those Trustees who might have met Mr. Ludwig at that event. There was general discussion of the composition of the Board and general agreement that every effort should be made to identify additional Trustee candidates. It was felt to be very important to identify candidates from the Middle East, particularly from Saudi Arabia, Ku­wait and the United Arab Emirates. It was felt that, while it was not necessary to add an Egyptian to the Board when adding Arabs of other nationalities, it was important to be sensitive to Egyptian concerns that there be some rough parity. The Committee also felt that attention should be paid to identifying Trustee candidates from those parts of the U.S. not represented on the Board.
