The Agenda was approved as presented. 2. The minutes of the last meeting were approved. Wednesday 12:30 PM 3. Progress Report on U. S. Government Funding - Dr. Pedersen briefed the Committee on the steps being taken to restore the value of the U.S. Embassy Trust Fund to the $50 million originally intended by Congress. Dr. Pedersen said that Collins, Van Dusen, and Newson all support this initiative. Mr. Bond told Dr. Pedersen that he should tell Ambassador Wisner that Congress has decided to imple­ment this suggestion. Ambassador Wisner also has asked us to include in the initiative LE20 million to provide endowment . monies to support the activities of Chicago House, ARCE, and the Fulbright Commission. In this re­gard, Terry Peel (House Appropriations staff) raised questions as to whether funds could be used for such programs rather than for development activities. Dr. Pedersen said that he felt that the legislation covered such activities. The President said that Ambassador Wisner asked him to suggest to Bond and Newson that when the move was about to come Senator Kasten or Senator Leahy should ask the Egyptian Ambassador to come see them to tell him what they were doing and why. Dr. Eilts wondered if it was appropriate for a senator to summon an ambassador in this manner.
