The agenda was approved. 2. The minutes of the last meeting were approved. 3. Dr. Pedersen reviewed the status of the overhead to be received, AUC expects over half a million dollars from AID (see Andrew Snatith report). The calculation was made on 139% of salary and wages. Private donors such as Ford Foundation and IDRC etc. are resistant to paying overhead. 4. Dr. Pedersen reported on the status of the pound endowment effort. Dr. Pedersen, Mr. Schieren, and Mr. Hedlund met with Mr. Stone and Mr. Precht. They discussed the idea of a long term-low interest loan from pound balances accumulating as a result of US AID. There are 200-300 million pounds in the special account; 1 billion will be generated. The Egyptian government is now putting funds into the special account and the US and Egypt are negotiating where to distribute the funds. So far about 900 million is allocated but this is tentative. AUC would like 10 million LE per year for 5 years. We are waiting for a firm decision from the US Embassy. Veliotes is sympathetic but no policy decision has been made within the Embassy. Dr. Pedersen said he does not think anyone in the Embassy is against our getting the loan. Mr. Shindy, however, appears to be against it. The question is whether the Embassy will use some pressure. 5. Dr. Pedersen mentioned the possibility of a meeting with McPherson. He explained that Congressman Long has shown an interest in AUC and he has put AUC on a list of five institutions he was most interested in for McPherson. Dr. Pedersen thought :'~ he and Mr. Hedlund called on McPherson it would get McPherson to focus on AUC. We should let him know that if we are not going to get the loan we will need $4 million each year from ASHA­another AID source. Government Relations Committee -]
