MINUTES Government Relations Committee Board of Trustees THE AMERICAN UNIVERSITY IN CAIRO November 8, 1984 Wednesday The River Club 12:30 Attending: Dr. Eilts, Dr. Pedersen, Mr. Aldrich, Mrs. Bartlett, Mrs. Yost. 1. The Agenda was approved. 2. The minutes of the last meeting were approved. 3. Dr. Pedersen reviewed where things stand ·on our efforts to get the pound endowment restored by the U.S. gove rnment. Dr. Pedersen reported that AID Administrator Peter McPherson came to lunch at Aue in October. Mr . McPherson was angry about AUe's efforts to bring pressure on AID from the Hill. Dr. Pedersen felt that he was probably annonyed both by the letter which Senator Hatfield had sent to Secretary Shultz askin~ the Secretary to study AUe's long term funding needs as well as the language that came out in support of Aue in the Continuing Resolution. Dr. Pedersen was able to counter several of Mr. McPherson's charges and Dr. Pedersen felt that the session had been extremely useful and that it ended on a positive note with the administrator expressing support for the uni versi ty. 4. Dr. Pedersen discussed what our strategy should be no,,'. The plan had been to have ex-Secretaries Rogers and Vance calIon Secretary Shultz and Administrator McPherson with Dr. Pedersen. In light of the rather difficult session with the Administrator in Cairo Dr. Eilts suggested that Dr. Pedersen calIon Rogers and Vance and brief them on where things stand and get their opinions as to how and when to proceed in terms of making calls etc. Dr. Pedersen agreed and said he would try to contact Mr. Rogers and Mr. Vance when he was in New York the week after the Board meeting
