Board Minutes -7- May 27, 1982 being tested. The new space intended for the Management Center is expected to be ready by September, 1983. This involves building additional space on the roof of quarters now occupied by the SRC. Engineering analysis of the foundations of the DPS buildings is being undertaken to determine whether additional floors could be added there. The designs for Hill House are completed and a proposal for its renovation will be presented to the Weyerhaueser Foundation in June, 1982. The new Hill House will help the University to address student needs. Consideration is being given to building student housing on the "Z-2" site. Thus far 9900 square feet of faculty housing has been purchased at a cost of LE600,000. This will provide 8 units. 20 classrooms will be renovated this swnmer. The Al Arish land has been purchased but the exact site is not yet known. The aptitude testing project carried out in cooperation with Mansoura University, ETS, and possibly the University of Kuwait has been pre-tested and is ready to be used in University admissions next fallon a sample of incoming students. All involved with the project are extremely satisfied with its development thus far. The Desert Development and Demonstration project has submitted two projects to AID for consideration: one involves examining alternative sources of renewable energy for agricultural communities and the other an assessment of four strategies for single-family farms. The committee formed to advise the University on the future of Egyptology at AVC has ~de its report and has come to the conclusion that Egyptology definitely has a place in the AUC curriculum. The committee recommended either a major or a minor, depending upon the availability of funds. A minor could be continued with one full-time staff member, but a major would require at least two. There was some discussion on the most appropriate type of Egyptologists for the program and on whether the position should be tenurable (no present positions are currently available in the Department). Several recommendations for filling the position were supplied by the committee. There was discussion of the Trustees' role in the tenuring of any AUC faculty. The Committee believes that Trustee involvement in such decisions is common and that the Board should consider policies which would require Board approval in any tenure ratification. Dr. Pedersen will review the procedures for appointment, promotion and tenure with the Board at the Octobe
