The first characteristic is an important one to AUC: the student body is just about evenly split between men and women. Eighty percent of our students attended an Egyptian private school, 10% went to public school, and 10% studied outside Egypt. In secondary school, approximately 54% were science majors and 42% were non-science majors. Eighty-three percent of these students graduated with a 75% average or higher, and 72% of them maintained better than a 2.5 grade point average at the University. AUC students come from educated families: seventy-nine percent of the fathers of current students are college graduates, and 24% have a bachelor's degree or better. These students come from relatively small families for the Middle East: 67% of them have three or less brothers and sisters. Sixty-nine percent of them plan on having two children or less. Nearly 39% of the current enrollment have relatives who are graduates of The American University in Cairo, and 18% of them have relatives who work at AUC. AUC students are well travelled. More than 85% have travelled outside Egypt, and nearly 70% have lived outside the country. Sixty-four percent of them expect to continue their studies abroad.
