Two candidates were mentioned by Mr , Thoron--Dr. Hussein Said (former sequestrator) and Dr. Mohamed Allam, Dean of Records and Admissions. It was noted that Dean Allam will be in the UnIted States shortly and it was agreed that he should be infor­mal ly interviewed by members of the Board. At this point the Board returned to consideration of the Prelimin­ary Budget and to a vote on it . Mr . Thoron stated that in many ways we are alreadr committed to the 1971-72 program and therefore to the Budget. He repeated that we must revise the pound section. He said that short of a catastrophe, he could see no reason to antiCIpate fewer Egyptian Pounds in the years ahead than we have received this year . Dr . Harbison had to leave the meeting at this point but asked to be put on record as voting for approval of the Preliminary Budget . He said that he does not, however, share Mr . Thoron's optimism regarding increased dollars from AID and believes, therefore, that there should be a contin­gency plan for reducing dollar expendItures if the income is not realized . The Prel1minary Budget for the academic-fiscal year 1971-72 was passed by the Board. All voted Yea except for Mrs . Hammond who abstained . Dr . Dirks asked whether the "educational and cultural travel grants" are still in the Budget . Mr . Thoron replied that they are, and because of prior committments he contInues to recommend them, but that thIS is an item to be cut if we don't get dollar income and that it would be "one of the first to be cut ."
