A journalist in this modern age must not only be introduced to the technical aspects of his vocation, but also must have acquired a body of knowledge. In this way the University can be sure that its student product has had the training in thought and analysis avail-able to the liberal arts student, and that his writing will be firm-ly grounded in an academic discipline. When a graduate program in journalism can be excellently launched, the undergraduate certificate in journalism and its place in the University curriculum should be reconsidered. c. Chemistry. The University should continue to grant the BS in chemistry There is not only a high proportion of students desiring the degree but also a good job market. The curriculum necessary can be managed without extra staffing nor will the liberal arts character of the undergraduate degree be vitiated since both general and divisional requirements must be fulfilled. d. Business Administration. The present major in Economics-Business Administration is to be dropped, However, a certificate should be granted upon successful completion of a pro-fessional sequence in Business Administration in conjunction with a divisional major in Social Science with a concentration in Econo-mics. 2. Professional Programs to be droppedor modifiedd,, a. Ph ies-Mathematics. The professional sequence in physics-mathematics leading towards a BS degree should be dropped. Relatively few students are involved. The committee feels that the divisional major in the sciences will be equally useful to those few students since, unlike chemistry, there is not the professional need for the BS degree in physics-mathematics. b. Home Economics. There are at present two progreris in home economics, one a "homemaker9 s" degree leading towards a BP. ans1 the other a professional degree leading towards a BS. Both programs involve relationships with the American Girls? College. Botn programs are unsatisfactory as they now stand. Subject to consultation with the American Girls? Col-lege (since the present program is a joint arrangement and any mod..- f ications must be jointly agreed upon) , the BS degree in Home Econo-mics should not be offered because the credit hours demanded for tíi s professional degree, as well as the scheduling problems in. vowed in the divisional requirements, and the plan to spread the general requirements throughout the four-year period, make the pro-gram leading to this professional degree unfeasible.
