1 REPORT FOR BOARD OP TRUSTEES June 29,30 1956 TUITION EXEMPTION FOR MEM ERS...OP THE STAFF AND THEIR FAMILIES Council recommends to the Trustees the following rules regarding Tuition Fees for full-time members of the University staff and their. families: 1. Full-time members of the staff may attend courses leading to a Bache-lor's degree in any unit of the University free of any charges for tuition fees, incidental fees, laboratory fees, or any other fees. The same privi-lege will be extended to the spouses or children of full-time members of the staff. 2. A full-time member of the staff shall be interpreted to mean any officer, teacher, clerical worker, library assistant, servant, or any other employee who is on a long term contract or who has been in the full-time service of the University at least one year and has a reasonable expectation of continuing in the full-time service of the institution. 3. The privileges described in Section 1 shall not include language in-struction in the School of Oriental Studies. Nor shall these privileges include courses taken for credit towards any graduate degree. 4. Members of the full-time staff, spouses or children, taking advantage of this privilege shall be governed by the usual regulations concerning admissions, registration, attendance, credit and degree requirements. 5. Members of the staff wishing to follow courses in the University shall secure permission from the head of the unit in which they are employed. Such studies shall not interfere with the performance of the regular duties of the staff member during the hours that are customarily assigned for these duties by the head of the unit. A unit head may deny permission to any member of his staff to follow courses in the University, if in his judgment such studies will interfere with the efficient performance of the duties for which the employee is engaged. 6. The privilege of•auditing any lecture course in the University may be extended to any full-time member of the staff, spouse, or children upon the approval of the head of the unit concerned. 7. The Bursar shall follow the method used for Trustee scholarships in the financial accounting for the tutition fees for full-time members of the University staff, spouses, or children. 8. These regulations shall supersede those approved by the Council in Minute No. 3202 of January 31, 1951, and shall be effective as of September 1, 1956. NOTE: Item 3 above, is subject to reconsideration as experience is gained in the graduate program, and as a special committee in Arabic instruction has an opportunity to consider the matter of free tuition at this point
