PERSONNEL POLICIES W. THE AMERICAN UNIVERSITY AT CAIRO INTRODUCTORY STATEMENT This statement on Personnel Policies is a revision of a statement submitted to the University Faculty on May 19, 1956, by the Self-Study Committee on Teaching and Adminlstrative Personnel* As may be noted at several points, this present statement is unfinished. As additions are ready, or as changes * may be made the modified or additional pages will be prepared and circulated. It is suggested, therefore, that those persons receiving this important document keep it as a loose-leaf notebook, so that other pages may be substituted or added when circulated. I STATEMENT OF PRINCIPLES A - The teaching, research and administrative staff should consist primarily but not exclusively of Egyptian and American personnel. Effort should'be made to have staff members of both of these nationalities at all levels. B - The aims of the salary and other personnel policies are to bring to the university the best possible staff with the moneys available and to provide conditions that will permit them to work efficiently and happily and at the same tine encourage than to scholarly growth and increasingly effective service. C - Except for certain special services the university is strongest if most of its staff members serve in full-time capacity. The term full-time means that the staff member devotes his full working energies to his position in the university. Stated in another way, a full-time position is one which demands the full-time working energy of the staff member. D - In view of the concept of full-time service as described above, it would normally be inadvisable for a professional staff member to carry on additional work for compensation, especially during the academic year. When a full-time staff member wishes to take on some additional work assignment for compensation, he must receive permission from his administrative superior to do so. Permission may be granted only on the condition that and as long as such work docs not interfere in any way with the staff member*s performance of his duties in the University. E - Promotion in rank shall be based upon increasingly useful and skillful service to the university, according to the following criteria: 1 - Evidence of scholarship. (Graduate study, publication, participation in professional meetings). Z - Evidence of affectiveness in the classroom and other teaching situations. 3 - Other service to the university These criteria will apply equally to all staff members
