APPENDIX IV COTiMITTEE ON LOCATION AND BUILDING REPORT ON CAIRO CITY PLANNING CQVi, tISSION' S RECOMMENDATIONS In 1955 tho Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs created Egypt' s first Cairo City Planning Commission with the objcct of drawing up a city plan for the capital's future physical and domographic develop-ment within the next fifty years. The plan has boon completed, but has not been logislatod into effect as of this date. The Commission analyzed the natural e.:pansion of Cairo during the last two gen rations and concluded that the areas of rapid growth were Dokki, Agouza (west of the present University campus), Heliopolis (north-cast of Cairo) . The Pyramids Road, on which is located the University's property, has witnessed only sporadic and limited physical dovolopmont. On the basis of those findings the Commission recommended that the land on the vicinity of the Pyramids Road be considered as land for agricultural use except for an arca of 500 metres on either side of the main Pyramids Road. This latter arca is planned to house residential villas, and encompasses about 35 acres of the University property. Public facilities including roads, electricity, water and drainage will be supplied by the Authorities only to tho extent of 500 metres on either side of the Pyramids Road. Tho balance of the University's Pyramids Road property, although earmarked as land for agricultural use, can be utilized as a site for a university campus providod the University supplies its own public utilities.
