TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS Because of the difference in travel plans of individeal students who may wish to include Western Europe or the Mediterranean countries in their itinerary, the student is free to make his own travel arrangements There are good ship accommoda-tions on the American Faport Lines from New York to Alexandria. In addition there are many ships between the U.S. an.d southern Lurope, with transshipping to Alexandria, or flights directly to Cairo, The American office of American University at Cairo, 175 Fifth â venue9 New York City, will give further information concerning travel arrangements, visas, passports, inoculations,, etc. and will help the student locate responsible travel agencies. Should the students wish to travel directly to Egypt from New York, the American office will arrange group passage and. itinerary, COST The basic fee for room, tuition and the three planned field trips ana. visits (to Cairo and environs, to Luxor, and to the Holy Land) will be $.000.00. Food cost will vary according to tastes. In general food is less expensive in Egypt than in the U.S., unless one demands imported ".Lm.erican foods". If students eat most of their meals at the university cafeteria, they might save from ten to twenty percent on the cost of similar meals in America. Travel from the U.S, to Cairo and back will range widely, according to the accommodations sought. Pound trip cost (from New York City) may be hold to as low as $.550.00 or be as high as ß.12Q0.00. THE SCHOOL YEAR Regular semester classes begin on October 8, 1956. The second semester ends on June 7, 1957. There is a ten day break between semesters and. various Christian, Moslem, and national holidays are observed. Students in the "Junior Year in Egypt" program are asked to arrive by October 1, 1956. One week of general orientation and sight seeing is planned before classes begin. APPLICATION PPOCEDUPES To be eligible for admission to this program, the students must have better than "C!' average in his college work tod.ate. He must have a real interest in promoting friendly relationships between the Arab world and the United States, a genuine desire to learn, and the character and maturity necessary to serve as a student ambassador from America. The Lmoricnn University will consider only those applications which carry with them the full recommendation of the cooperating American colleges and universities. Students interested in applying should consult the dean or other stated college official, who will have complete inforiw tion r.nd applications forms.
